In Sweden, archaeologists found an unusual burial of an Iron Age woman: what is known

Archaeologists believe that priests could mention this burial in written sources as early as 1667.

In Sweden, archaeologists found an unusual burial. A needle and a knife were found near the female skeleton, stuck straight into the grave.

This is reported by Arkeologerna.

The artifacts were discovered in an Iron Age burial ground in the Prissgorden area. Archaeologists believe that priests could mention this burial in written sources as early as 1667.

The burial complex contains up to 50 graves dating from 500 BC to 400 AD.

“This spring, during a preliminary investigation, we found a human bone, and when we started to dig up the ground, there were two more small skull fragments. We also found two fibulae, suit buckles and a suit pin. Then we realized that this could be the burial site that said the priest,” says the archaeologist.

Scientists examined two graves located close to each other at the same time. One was less charred and contained animal bones, while the other was heavily charred but contained even more interesting finds.

“The second grave was extremely smokey and covered with a thick layer of soot. When we dug, we saw that an iron folding knife was simply stuck into the ground with the point. It was probably used for working leather. We don’t know why, but it’s clear that it was valuable to women. It is also very well preserved and may have been in the pyre before it was impaled,” she said.

A small needle was also kept in the woman’s grave, and part of a finger bone indicates that the deceased probably had arthritis. In general, excavations in the Prissgorden area have been going on for a year and a half. Here, the cremated remains are placed in pits that are covered with earth or small stones. But in some cases, almost no bones are found in the pits.

According to archaeologists, this means that a person could be cremated at the burial ground, and then the remains were moved to another place.

We will remind you that a tomb with a “family of coffins” was discovered in Egypt – some items are in perfect condition.
